Soul Urge Number: What Your Heart Truly Wants

The vowels of your name
At Alkiimia we simply call it your Soul. It's the same number you'll find on other sites as the Soul Urge Number, the Heart's Desire Number, or the Soul Number.
Your Soul Urge Number shows what you want deep down, even if you don't always say it: what motivates you, what gives you peace, and what you look for in your relationships. In Pythagorean numerology it's calculated from the vowels of your full birth name, and it's one of the three core numbers of your name, along with your Personality Number and your Destiny Number.
What is the Soul Urge Number?
If your name were a house, your Personality would be the front that others see, and your Soul Urge would be what happens inside. It's the motivation underneath your decisions: why you choose certain people, what makes you feel fulfilled, and what unsettles you when it's missing.
That's why many schools consider it the most intimate number in your chart: it's felt more than it's seen, and sometimes people discover it with surprise, because it doesn't match the image they give.
How to calculate your Soul Urge Number
Use only the vowels of your full birth name, exactly as it appears on your birth certificate: first, middle, and last names. Each vowel has a value in the Pythagorean chart: A = 1, E = 5, I = 9, O = 6, U = 3. The Y counts as a vowel only when it sounds like one (Lynn, Emily, Mary).
At Alkiimia we add the vowels of each name, then add those results together and reduce the total to a single digit; the master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are not reduced. For example, for Emma Rose Walker:
Emma: 5 + 1 = 6
Rose: 6 + 5 = 11
Walker: 1 + 5 = 6
6 + 11 + 6 = 23 → 2 + 3 = 5. Her Soul Urge Number is 5.

Soul Urge, Personality, and Destiny: how they differ
All three come from your name and are read together:
- Soul Urge (vowels): what you want inside.
- Personality (consonants): how others see you.
- Destiny (all the letters): your talents and the way you act.
When your Soul Urge and your Personality are very different, it's common to feel that people "don't see you as you are." For example, someone with Soul Urge 6 (who wants to care for others) and Personality 1 (who comes across as independent) can seem distant when they actually want closeness.

The Soul Urge Number in love
In a relationship, the Soul Urge is the number that weighs most, because it shows what each person needs to feel good. Two people whose Soul Urges understand each other tend to feel "at home" together, even if they're very different on the outside. That's why many schools compare both Soul Urge Numbers first when they study compatibility. You can compare yours in love compatibility.
A piece of advice for your Soul Urge
When something in your life doesn't feel right even though everything looks fine on the outside, go back to your Soul Urge Number. Often that restlessness is a sign that you're tending to what's expected of you rather than to what you truly want.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do other sites give me a different Soul Urge Number? It depends on how they treat the Y and how they reduce. At Alkiimia we add the vowels of each name, add those results together, and keep the master numbers 11, 22, and 33. That's why some names that give 2, 4, or 6 elsewhere give 11, 22, or 33 here.
- Should I use my married name or my nickname? No. Your Soul Urge is calculated from your full birth name. The name you use today (married name, stage name, or signature) also has a vibration, but it's read separately, in Signature & Everyday Name.
- Can my Soul Urge Number change? No. It comes from your birth name and stays with you for life, although the way you live it matures over the years.
- What's the difference between the Soul Urge and the Life Path? Your Soul Urge comes from your name and shows what you want. Your Life Path comes from your date of birth and shows what you're here to learn. When they match, desire and learning go in the same direction.
- What if my Soul Urge and Destiny are the same number? The energy of that number gets stronger: what you want inside and the way you act go together, with their talents and also their excesses.
- What does a Soul Urge 11, 22, or 33 mean? They're master numbers: more intense and demanding. They're lived first through their base (2, 4, or 6), and over the years you grow into their master vibration.
Your Soul Urge is only one part of your name
Knowing what your Soul Urge wants is like knowing the engine of a car. But the journey also depends on the car itself (your Destiny), on how people see you drive by (your Personality), and on the road you're here to travel (your Life Path). For example, a Soul Urge 5 that wants freedom lives very differently with a Life Path 4, which asks for consistency, than with a Life Path 3.
